Why Is Aitutaki Called The World's Most Beautiful Lagoon?

Aitutaki has been called "the world's most beautiful island" by someone who knows his islands, Lonely Planet founder, Tony Wheeler.

Which might give a hint as to how the Cook Islands came to top Lonely Planet's Top 10 list of must-visit destinations for 2022 for its 'wow' factor!

It's also long been hailed as home to the world’s most beautiful lagoon. Imagine yourself gazing across this vast expanse of turquoise, feel yourself drifting into a delicious trance, gently melting into its infinite blue as it deeply refreshes your soul.

Years ago Hollywood screen luminaries such as Cary Grant and John Wayne journeyed aboard glamourous TEAL Coral Route flying boats to Aitutaki to see this wonder with their own eyes.

More recently Sports Illustrated shot their 50th Anniversary Swimsuit Edition with a bevy of beautiful models at Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort, where Air New Zealand also shot their inflight video Safety In Paradise. Senior Editor of the Swimsuit edition, MJ Day, said of Aitutaki: “… hands down Aitutaki is the most beautiful place I have ever seen in my life.” This from someone who’s been to the world's most photogenic locations.

Another who’s been there, seen that is Catriona Rowntree, the popular longtime presenter of Australian TV travel show, Getaway. Catriona considers Aitutaki to be The Most Romantic Place on Earth, and she even chose Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort for her honeymoon stay.

Captain Bligh and his men are considered to have been the first Europeans to land at Aitutaki, just 17 days before the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty.

To discover Aitutaki nowadays all you need do is take the 45minute flight from Rarotonga. Languid, leisurely days on, by or in the fabled lagoon, followed by wildly romantic nights.

Legend has it that the colour blue was invented in Aitutaki. Once you arrive, you’ll see for yourself how this legend came to be. Feast your eyes on the bluest blue they’re ever likely to see. Breathtakingly, achingly beautiful. Alluring Aitutaki. Like going to Heaven, while you're still on Earth.
